Trnič is a hard cheese, decorated with carved patterns, that symbolises the shepherding heritage of Velika Planina.
According to folk tradition, the shape of the cheese represents a woman’s breast, which is why it was made and gifted in pairs. Young men would present trnič to their beloved as a token of affection, a symbol of love and fidelity, and even a promise of marriage. The shepherd would keep one half, while the other would be given to the girl, who often treasured it for years. Accepting the cheese signified her agreement to the shepherd’s courtship.
